Sandra has returned to Romania

Prosport reports that Sandra returned to Romania yesterday, walking on her own, without crutches but wearing a special device on her right foot and a plaster cast on her left hand.
During the operation, the specialist has fitted a tube that will disolve on it's own in 6 months.
The specialist has created a special boot for Sandra so she is able to walk quicker and will allow her to gradually have more flexibility so in 12 weeks time, she will be able to do light jumps. She will have to wear a splint of plaster at night for protection, explains Sandra's father.
The plaster cast on her hand will come off in 3 weeks time.

Raluca Haidu competed at the Junior Internationals in Japan and finished 6th AA.

News about Sandra Izbasa

Sandra travelled to Germany where she sustained a 3 hour operation by a German specialist in Frankfurt. The tendon was completely torn as initially the doctors thought it was partially torn. The recovery period is set to be between 4 and 6 months. Adrian Stoica would like Sandra to go back to Deva if she wants and to recover there alongside her teammates but Nadia has offered
to help out so she gets the best physiotherapists available. Nadia has 2 variations to offer to Sandra, either she would stay in Oklahoma and she would be seen to by a renowned doctor or a good friend of theirs who lives in Las Vegas and who is the doctor of Tiger Woods. The choice is Sandra's but it's important that she recovers as quickly as possible, reports Prosport about Nadia's offer.
About the accident, Sandra told Prosport that when she fell on the floor, she knew something
had happened but she couldn't figure out what. She got onto her knees but then when she tried to put her foot down, she couldn't. To start with it was very difficult as she kept on seeing the accident in her head over and over again but she's better now and can't wait until she can get
rid of the plaster cast. She's a bit stuck as she's left handed and her left hand is in plaster too. She also can't use her crutches now. Her hand will come out of the plaster cast in 3 weeks.
Sandra said that she is delighted that Nadia has rung her and offered to help as it means a lot to her and she's very thankful.
About the future she says that she can't wait to start recovery therapy and that it happened now, while she was prepared for Worlds, gives her an extra drive and she will fight as much as she can.

Her teammates, however, are struggling with having witnessed the accident and are a bit scared. Nicolae Forminte thinks that's also the reason why they made so many errors during Nationals. Anamaria explains that it's the reason why she fell off bars because it happened in training and she started worrying if something worse would happen. She feels that Sandra was in good form, she was even the right weight and when something like this can happen to her, anything can happen to anyone.
Adrian Stoica acknowlegded the fear of the girls and called in a phsychologist to help them.
Ana Porgras said: 'It was frightening but also the fact that it happened a step away from us. It's difficult to try and continue after something like this.'

Apparatus finals Romanian Nationals

Key during Vault was which gymnast could perform 2 different vaults. Even though Anamaria Tamarjan performed 2 very good DTY, she didn't medal because of this reason, same with Ana Porgras who performed two FTY.
Diana Chelaru seems to struggle with nerves. She stalled her run yet again for her second vault but performed 2 solid vaults in the end, a DTY and a handstand, piked forward. (13.725)

Vault

1. Diana Chelaru 14.287
2. Amelia Racea 13.700
3. Dana Andrei 13.287

Anamaria had a nightmare of a routine, she fell out of her handstand to low bar, tried to
improvise by adding an extra swing but completely lost her way and had to jump off. She also fell on her dismount.
Diana Chelaru fell again on her Jaeger, same for Gabriela Dragoi and who had a dead hang after
a Gienger.
Ana Porgras showed a beautiful routine and it's so evident that she's worked very hard on bars. She showed nice stalder work.
Junior Dana Andrei also showed good form and a beautiful Jaeger and a double layout dismount. She's quite a talent as she seems strong on all 4 apparatus.

Bars

1. Ana Porgras 15.050
2. Amelia Racea 14.375
3. Dana Andrei 13.900

Diana Chelaru fell off beam with her side somi and had other problems along the way. Ana
Porgras who was upset with herself as she fell off beam on Saturday, wanted to do a clean routine this time around but had to encounter another fall after her split leap to back tuck. At
the end of the competition, she performed her routine again and this time it went well, no falls, just a few adjustments.
Anamaria Tamarjan performed a good routine without too many problems, just a little hesitation after her switch ring leap but beautiful form throughout the routine and a beautiful sheep jump.
Gabriela Dragoi performed better than on Saturday and after her routine she was talked to by Anca Grigoras who seemed to encourage her.
Winner of beam was Amelia Racea, who showed good acrobatic skills combined with good split leaps and a high sheep jump to finish her routine off with a good double piked somi.

Beam

1. Amelia Racea 15.500
2. Anamaria Tamarjan 15.250
3. Gabriela Dragoi 14.625

Diana Chelaru redeemed herself from falling off bars and beam and showed a good floor routine starting with a full in, whip to triple twist, a triple pirouette nicely performed, running front tuck into a double back and she finished with a double pike. When she came off floor, she was
hugged by Simona Amanar, who sat on the side watching.
Amelia Racea performed to the Pirates of the Carribean, nice routine. She lost balance on her pirouette but her acrobatic skills were good.
Anamaria Tamarjan performed well on floor, showing a piked full in, tucked full in, full twist to 1 1/2 twist and finished with a double piked.
Ana Porgras is in a class of her own on floor, she's so elegant. All she needs now is to up her difficulty in the tumbling and she will be difficult to beat. It's beautiful to watch.

Floor

1. Diana Chelaru 14.850
2. Amelia Racea 14.750
3. Ana Porgras 14.675
3. Anamaria Tamarjan 14.675

Ana Porgras wins Nationals

There were only 16 girls competing in this year's Nationals. The clubs are struggling badly financially and they couldn't field teams.
Adrian Stoica explained that the Germans heard about Sandra's accident and have offered a helping hand. She will be going to Frankfurt now for her operation.

The competition started on vault and first up was Ana Porgras who performed a full twisting Yurchenko. (13.975)
Anamaria Tamarjan stuck her DTY for a 14.475 but she was a bit loose in the legs in the flight onto vault and in her twist. Her second vault was a single twisting Yurchenko. (13.700)
Amelia Racea showed a full twisting Yurchenko (14.000) and performed a Yurchenko 1/2 on, front somi for a 13.275)
Diana Chelaru appeared nervous, sighing all the time while waiting for her turn. Her DTY had bad leg form. (14.475)

Gabriela Dragoi performed on bars, her Gienger was very low and with her Jaeger she was very close to the bars. The entire routine was laboured and Forminte was not happy afterwards.
Diana Chelaru first performed a Gienger and then went completely crooked into her Jaeger and fell. Her dismount, a double layout was good. (12.750)
Amelia Racea performed a high Jaeger but had a hesitation in the turn on high bar and leg separation in the flight to low bar. (13.400)
Anamaria Tamarjan fell off after a full turn on the high bar, her Tkatchev was ok and she stuck her double layout but it was very close to the bar. (12.725)
Ana Porgras performed a stalder to 1 1/2 turn into Jaeger and a double layout dismount (14.775) She has obviously been working on bars a lot while healing her leg injury and it paid off.
Cerasela Patrascu is back in action after being out for more than a year. She has such nice form on bars, showing a Shaposhnikova, nice stalders and a high Tkatchev. She's still not taking any risks on the dismount as she performed a single layout off but it's so good to see her back after hearing various rumours that she had left Deva. She's also come out of her shell, chatting and smiling away to the other girls.

Diana Chelaru was very positive on beam where she showed a great full in but had 2 small steps forward, free arial to 2 split leaps, side somi, split leap to back tuck and ff-ff-double somi off. (14.850)
Amelia Racea started with a front tuck but had a major balance check, free arial, flick to back piked, switch leap into split leap, good side somi and double piked dismount. (14.600)
Cerasela Patrascu started with a free arial-ff-layout stepout, good side somi and lovely split
leaps but her dismount was easy, running full twist. (13.725)
Ana Porgras on beam is something special and she's so elegant on this piece of apparatus. She showed combinations of free arial-flick to layout stepout, back walkover, flick to layout somersault but sadly fell off, free cartwheel to split leap and double pike off. (14.725)
Anamaria Tamarjan showed a beautiful sheep jump but had problems on her switch leap. Other than that, she had a good routine with side somi and front tuck but nothing out of the ordinary. Her score was a little on the high side. (14.775)
Gabriela Dragoi looked a little insecure on beam, showing a front tuck but wobbled, free arial-ff-layout stepout, double pirouette (wobble), side somi and a double twisting dismount. ( 14.450) One has to see if she can get ready in time for Worlds as she's clearly not fit and up to par with her routines due to her re-occuring tibia injury.

The organisation had such a howler on floor, starting the wrong music for various gymnasts.
Ana Porgras is like a prima ballerina on floor, dancing to classical music which really suits her. Unfortunately she had problems with her first tumbling run, full in where she stepped out of bounds and also on her second pass, 2 1/2 twist to punch front where she stepped out of bounds. She has an amazing spin with her leg alongside her ear, a double piked somi and she finished with a double somi. (14.050)
Anamaria Tamarjan started with a spot on piked full in, straight back into a fucked full in. She danced to music of the Pirates of the Carribean and showed beautiful lines. She finished with a double piked. (14.325)
Diana Chelaru has a Hungarian Rapsody as her floor music and started with a full in. She also showed a triple twist, a good triple pirouette, step out to double tuck and finished with a double piked. (14.625)
Amelia Racea started with a good full in, showed a triple twist and finished with a double piked somi but the broadcast finished before they could show her score.

After the competition, Ana Porgras said to Prosport that at the start of the competition, she didn't think she could win but after vault and bars, she saw that she was close to a place on the podium. She's upset that she fell off beam but she was very very nervous and hopes to perform
a clean routine during the apparatus finals tomorrow. She is conscious of the fact that she has a lot more work to do and she will train as hard as she can before Worlds where she hopes to be in contention for an all-around medal. She finds it still a little difficult to compete on all four apparatus but she hopes that she will find the rhythm before Worlds in London.

1. Ana Porgras: VT: 13.975; UB: 14.775; BB: 14.725; FX: 14.050 Total: 57.525
2. Diana Chelaru: VT: 14.475; UB: 12.750; BB: 14.850; FX: 14.625 Total: 56.700
3. Anamaria Tamarjan: VT: 14.475; UB: 12.725; BB: 14.775; FX: 14.325 Total: 56.300

The youngsters were all struggling on bars and one after the other fell off. Larisa Iordache is
the one to watch and so talented, especially on beam where she scored a 15.775, the highest score of the competition. She landed her full in spot on and showed a side somi, front tuck, double pirouette without a wobble and just beautiful poise all the way through her routine. She received a big hug from Lacramioara Filip, former National team member in 1991.
Larissa is equally good on floor, performing her routine with a smile. She showed an effortless full in to start with, 1 1/2 twist to punch front-punch front and a triple twist to finish. (14.400)
Her rival seems to come from Diana Bulimar, who improved so much on bars but just couldn't put it together today. She fell right at the start of her routine, trying to do a stalder combination on the low bar which was a pity as the rest of the routine was good. She came off and burst out in tears. Maybe it was still on her mind when she started beam as she had to encouter 2 falls and had many wobbles all throughout the routine. (12.650)
She too has good presentation on floor where she started with a full in, 2 1/2 twist punch front and finished with a double piked (14.200)
It was good to see Claudia Voicu back after she had her leg in a plaster cast due to an injury. She doesn't seem to have lost any of her form and dances on beam! It's great to see her mount with the Silivas mount and she showed a split into side somi, free arial-ff-layout stepout, switch leap into tucked somi but she came to grief on her 2nd side somi. Her dismount was a double piked somi (14.100)
She shines on floor and her Romanian music really suits her. She started with a double piked, 1 1/2 twist punch layout front, showed a nice double pirouette with leg horizontal and finished with a double tuck. Unfortunately they didn't show her score.

Quick round-up, Raluca Haidu didn't compete as she's in Japan for a competition. Loredana Sabau didn't have the best of competitions, dismounting so close to the high bar that she scared the
life out of her coach. Dana Andrei from Buzau didn't do too badly and showed good swing on bars for a 13.950
The smallest gymnast of the competition must have been Maria Belea, who fell off bars twice and seemed inconsolable. She did pretty well on beam (13.750) and got the crowd going on floor where she danced to jazzy music and showed a 2 1/2 twist to punch front. (13.225)

More tomorrow!

Update about Sandra's situation (morning update)

More news has come out about what has happened to Sandra Izbasa. It seems now that she (partially) ruptured her achilles tendon during take off and that is why it was so important that she had the presence of mind to pull in her head as she landed on her stomach. Sandra shouted out immediately that something was wrong, her right foot and left hand flaired up enormously straight away and as it seems now, she's also fractured her hand.
For Prosport, Nicolae Forminte said that what counts now is that she will be able to walk and continue sport. It's way too early to talk about a come back. The best case scenario would be that she will be doing phsycial training at the end of this year and then the mental side of it as she will still have to pick up the courage to go back on floor again.
At the start of this year, Sandra said: 'Odd numbered years have always brought me bad luck. I hope that this year this streak will be broken.' Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be as disaster
has struck again. First battling with her heel after an operation to remove a veruca and now this.
Sandra started the training session in Buzau really well, performing on beam without any
mistakes. Then on to floor, first series went perfectly but then during the second tumbling pass, it all went wrong. She shouted out that something had torn. Forminte said: Initially I didn't think it was serious but when she lifted her head and i saw the look in her eyes, I knew it was bad. I shouted out for ice and a doctor.'
The medics didn't want to drive Sandra all the way to Bucharest so in the end Nicolae Forminte threw 3 matrasses into the mini van, took doctor Ioachim Oana with him and drove Sandra to the University Hospital where she was admited by her father, who has been working there as a medical assistent for over 30 years. He was the one who put her plaster casts on, one on her foot, one on her hand. She will be out of gymnastics for at least 6 months.
Sandra's mother Roxana explains that Sandra needs peace but most of all rest. She thinks she hasn't come to terms with the present situation yet. After being so active every day, it's hard to accept that she's sitting in bed with her foot and hand in a plaster cast.
The plan is to have her operated on this Monday morning but things can change. There are still some tests to be done.

Sandra Izbasa seriously injured

Unfortunately Sandra Izbasa is out for Worlds after seriously injuring herself during a training-session on floor in Buzau, where Nationals are going to be held this weekend.
Prosport reports that she had a bad landing after her second tumbling pass, piked full in, and
tore her achilles tendon and broke her metatarsal bone in her foot. Nicolae Forminte said that thankfully Sandra had the presence of mind to pull in her head because otherwise he doesn't know what would have happened.
Sandra has been rushed to the emergency hospital in Bucharest and has been seen to by several specialists. She is already wearing a plaster splint and will be operated on this Monday.

17 September 2009

Patrascu will compete at Nationals

Cerasela Patrascu has had a miserable year after she injured herself in April last year at the European Championships. She's had a double operation on her knee (meniscus) and just as she was healing and ready to compete at last years Internationals, she injured her knee again. She has gone through more medical tests and also had to battle with weight gain but now she will compete at the National Championships. For Prosport, Nicolae Forminte said: 'Cerasela will compete on beam and bars. We would like to see how she deals with competing at an official competition and how much we can count on her for the future.'
The Romanian Nationals will be held in Buzau on the 18-20 of September.

For Gabriela Dragoi things aren't looking too promising. Her old tibia injury is flaring up again and she has been complaining about pain. Nicolae Forminte will decide just before the competition whether she can compete or not as he doesn't want to force her with Worlds being so close.

Nationals will be a good test for Worlds as Nicolae Forminte would like the girls to perform the routines that they will perform at Worlds but only when they are fully fit. He doesn't want to
take any risks in them sustaining and injury just before Worlds. He thinks it's very useful as there is still time to correct the mistakes.

Romanian team for Worlds announced

The Romanian Federation has announced the team for Worlds in London (13-18 October):
Sandra Izbasa, Anamaria Tamarjan, Ana Porgras, Diana Chelaru and reserve is Gabriela Dragoi.

Sandra Izbasa has succesfully passed her Bac exams and has been accepted at the University
of Physical Education and Sport in Cluj where she will study Kinesiotherapy and movement.

The team went to Izvorani (near Bucharest) for a week as a change of scenary. They will go back to Deva on the 9th of August and continue their preparation for Worlds.

Anamaria Tamarjan is battling on and wants to fight for an all-around medal at Worlds. For
Prosport she says: 'Finishing 5th at Europeans has motivated me. I know I can do better and I want to show people this. The pain that I had in Milan isn't as strong and it gives me hope.
Without work you can't achieve anything. This year, after Europeans, I went through a difficult period and it was really difficult to regroup. Now I'm working hard and I'm increasing my score on bars and on beam I'm adding a new link. I'm trying to improve on all apparatus.'

Anamaria has been from one injury to the next. She missed Europeans in Volos in 2006 due to an elbow injury. She was selected for the senior team in 2007 and made the team for Worlds in Stuttgart but yet again disaster struck but now she injured her knee and had to start from scratch again. Ana did well at Europeans in Clermont-Ferrand where she won gold with the team and bronze on floor but at the Olympics, she sustained another injury on her hip.
She feels more assured after the examination in Italy as she found out what the problem was
and she knows that she can continue gymnastics without any problems but she's still a little scared as you never know what's around the corner.

European Youth Olympic Days

Romania did well at the EYOD last week. Amelia Racea, Raluca Haidu and Diana Trenca won a silver medal behind Russia in the team competition.
Amelia won a silver medal in the all-around and posted the highest score of the meet.
Raluca Haidu finished a good 6th.
Amelia then went on to win 2 golds in the apparatus finals, on vault and beam and a silver on
bars and floor and then to think that she isn't even 15 years old yet! In the beam final Amelia
and Viktoria Komova received the same score but Amelia had a SV of 5.9 and a score of 8.750 versus Viktoria's SV 6.1 and a score of 8.550, so she had more deduction in the end.

Sandra has finished her Bac exams and has done very well. Now she wishes to study in Cluj as that's close to Deva. Now the focus shifts back to gymnastics again and she has to put the finishing touches to her routines and build a good routine. She hasn't been able to give it her all during training because of the stress due to her Bac exams so now she has to get back to
things.

Prosport reports that Catalina Ponor will leave Romania and will become a coach at the club of Teodora Ungureanu, who has a club together with her husband Sorin Cepoi close to New York.
She will leave on the 25th of July and will teach some gymnastics classes at a summer school.
Catalina is sad that she has never had a proposal in Romania and Mariana Bitang explains the reason that so many major champions leave Romania: 'That's how we Romanians are, when we don't need someone anymore, we turn our back on them. Afterwards, nobody bothers with these girls but we also lack a private system like they have in the West where parents pay for their children to do gymnastics. Without this system, vacancies for coaches in Romania is limited. That's the big drama of Romanian gymnastics.

The European Youth Olympic Days have started in Finland. The gymnasts Amelia Racea, Raluca Haidu and Diana Trenca will try and get on the rostrum. Nicolae Forminte explains that the goal is to go there and perform the routines as well as possible. The three juniors will perform senior based routines so there's a bigger risk of difficulty. If they will perform the elements well, they
will have chances to get on the rostrum.

The competition starts today with the team final and qualifications for the individual competition.
Thursday the 23rd is for the individual competition and Friday the 24th the apparatus finals.
