Forminte: 'Ponor will have a different training program'

Onlinesport reports that Nicolae Forminte declared for Mediafax that Catalina Ponor arrived at Izvorani Wednesday morning to start her training program in the afternoon but she will have a different program.

Forminte: 'Catalina Ponor arrived at Izvorani today (Wednesday) but she hasn't gone into the gym yet because she's just arrived and she's hardly accomodated herself and is catching her breath. In the afternoon she will take part at the first training. As a start, she will train differently because she's going through a period of re-adjusting her training after a long break.'

Asked if a decision had been made to where Catalina is going to train after the National team will go back to Deva, Forminte answered: 'Starting now, Catalina is part of the National team and is a member of the team and will train there where the rest of the gymnasts will train.'

Catalina will give it a try

After more than 2 years,
Catalina Ponor will join the National team at Izvorani. Adrian Stoica declared for Cotidianul that he hopes that things will go without syncope until the Olympics in Beijing and that this move is just a beginning as Catalina has to enter the team and adapt.
Mariana Bitang, who has been training Ponor for the last 4 months, has decided to step back from training so she can dedicate her time to the schedule that she started at Cotroceni in the function of presidential adviser but she promised to help Catalina and support her with what she can and will also visit Izvorani as often as she can. She will help her with a training schedule but Mariana Bitang feels that Catalina has to train with the team because as she can't benefit from the infrastructure that is necessary to achieve the best performance, she can't guarantee that Catalina will be on the podium at the Olympics. The lack of infrastructure was the main reason why Mariana Bitang resigned from coaching Catalina further on. She explains: 'If they could assure us of the conditions, I would have continued but that's how it is. Before Worlds I have improvised. To achieve results, Catalina needs an assistant, a person who can watch over her all the time, to follow her program, to see what she eats. I can't do that, I can't stay with Catalina 24 hours a day. Bellu and I, when we achieved results, we had an entire team behind us. I was on my own now. You can't do the same kind of training when you don't have a masseur, without having anyone who can help you recover. You need the right conditions and Catalina didn't have that. Besides we were training around the men's schedule as it was their gym we were training in and Catalina has understood and she agreed with me that she needs a different kind of training but in Bucharest that doesn't exist.'

Mariana has convinced Catalina to go and train in Izvorani under the guidence of Forminte but it remains to be seen if she will go back to Deva with the team once the gym there is ready. Mariana stipulates that everything is in the hands of the coaches now, it will depend on them how she will integrate in the team but for Catalina it will be extremely difficult because she will have to work with new coaches. It was difficult to convince Catalina to go there but she promised that she would at least try.

Ponor will train under Forminte

Never say never as the Romanian television channel TVR reports that Mariana Bitang has convinced Catalina Ponor to return to centralised training for the coming two months and therefore will train under Nicolae Forminte. The move is surprising considering the conflict situation between Ponor and Forminte in the past but Bitang, Forminte and Adrian Stoica made the decision that she should train with the National Team who will train in Bucharest while the gym in Deva is being repaired.
Ponor did exclude returning to Deva.

Ponor case continues and the girls will move to Bucharest

Catalina Ponor has returned to Romania after being in America but things remain to be uncertain regarding whether she is going to continue gymnastics or not. Adrian Stoica, President of the Romanian Federation declared the following for Prosport: 'I don't have any information from Catalina. I don't know a thing. I'll have a meeting with Mrs. Bitang to finalise this problem. After we will hear what decision she had made, we will take the next step to talk to Catalina. I hope that at the latest at the end of the week we will have a clear answer.'

In a week's time, the National team will move to Izvorani for about 40 days, to continue their training program as there will be repairs in Deva to the flooring as it's completely destroyed and very old.
The conditions in Izvorani are very good, much better than in Deva as the gym near Bucharest is new. That is why it is so important that the gym in Deva will be repaired and made up to standard.

Catching up

There is still no final decision about the situation with Catalina Ponor. Mariana Bitang did have a discussion with Catalina, Catalina has had a health check but is currently in America where she took part in the Gymnastics and Skating Show in Oklahoma (14th of October). When she returns to Romania, a decision will be made, reports Prosport.

After their holiday at the sea-side, the girls have returned to Deva at the start of October where they will stay at least a month. As there will be work done to the gym in Deva, they will move to either Izvorani (near Bucharest) or to Onesti, where the juniors train. Mr. Forminte mentioned that it would be interesting to train alongside the juniors. Together with the Federation he will decide in which competitions the girls will take part as preparation. At the moment, Steliana will compete in Milan on the 3rd of November, where she will take part in an invitational competition.

Anamaria Tamirjan and Cerasela Patrascu will have another check up and a scan, just to make sure both girls are a hundred percent fit. Mr. Forminte doesn't want to take any risks and force them into doing too much if there should still be any problems, that is why he has opted for another health check.
In the meantime he mentions that Aluissa is doing very well and her moral is very good and he thinks that is a bonus and will help her to get back into the gym soon.
Sandra's disappointment after Stuttgart has come to the surface now but most of all she is struggling with a state of tiredness. She is going through a difficult time as she had to recover in just 8 weeks from her metatarsal injury and that shows at the moment. They are trying to keep her in shape and they will see if she can take part at the DTB Cup in Stuttgart and the Arthur Gander Memorial on the 31st of October. Nicolae Forminte doesn't want to tire her too much.

Some dates:
DTB Cup, Stuttgart, Germany 26th to 28th of October
Arthur Gander Memorial, Beausobre, Switzerland 31st of October
Milan, Italy 3rd of November
Glasgow, Scotland 10th of November

Aluissa is recovering well, Tamarjan almost fit to start training again

After returning to Deva, Aluissa is following a daily program that the doctors in Bologna have recommended to her.
Nicolae Forminte explained for Prosport: 'Aluissa came back from the clinic with a book in which the doctors have written down all the stages of recovery that she has to follow and what she has to do every day. She is very conscious and respects everything they have written there because she wants to get back into the gym as quickly as possible. She has a good moral and she feels very motivated.'
The recovery period will probably be between 3 and 6 months.

Anamaria Tamarjan, who got injured during podium training in Stuttgart is almost fit enough to start training again. Forminte stipulates that she will have an RMI scan in a week so they know where they stand. Anamaria has already started training on bars a bit but as they don't want to force her leg, they have concentrated on exercises for the top half of her body so she doesn't lose too much muscle.
Forminte says that her recovery is going very well and that he thinks Anamaria will get the ok to start training fully again. He said they need her and count on her for the future.

Ponor: 'If Mariana Bitang won't continue to coach me, I will retire.'

Online Sport reports that triple Olympic Champion from Athens, Catalina Ponor, declared on Monday that she will retire from competitive gymnastics if her current coach, Mariana Bitang, will not continue to train her.
Catalina: 'I can not obligate Mrs. Bitang to coach me. I thank her for everything she has done for me, I know that she has made an effort to divide her work between the gym and presidential advisor. I don't want another coach, she is the only one who can take me to where I was in 2004.'
In her turn, Mariana Bitang declared that on Tuesday she will have a decisive discussion with the head of the Federation about Catalina's situation. 'I do not want to plunge into speculations. There are a lot of things to be discussed, to be finalised. Tuesday I will decide.'

Mariana Simionescu will be 80 years old soon and a special celebration will be organised.

Partially satisfied coach and an operation for Lacusteanu

Nicolae Forminte is partially satisfied with the result of Stuttgart as the girls managed to get through the nerves of this competition and adds that he knows it is not easy for them to follow a row of gymnasts who have been so successful in the past. About Steliana he told Prosport: 'I believed in Steliana as I also believe in every member of the team. The fact that in all the test competitions she achieved a score between 60 and 61 points showed that she had a good chance in the all-around. I am happy for her that she had the courage and strength to get past the double stress on beam, where Catalina Ponor competed alongside other adversaries. The Romanian gymnasts who wish to go for a medal always have to beat their own teammates and then the other adversaries. These Worlds were an exam of maturity for Stela and I know that she's ambitious to give everything she has at the Olympics.

Injured in April at the European Championships, Aluissa Lacusteanu has finally been operated on her right knee at a clinic in Bologna. The doctors have told Mr. Forminte that the operation has been succesful and he awaits to see the files as he knows that there could be a problem with her meniscus too, as that's often the case in a ligament injury. He then adds that they need to concentrate on her recovery as Aluissa is a very good gymnast with an extraordinary potential.

Money for Steliana

One of the sponsors of the Romanian Olympic Foundation have rewarded Steliana Nistor with a scholarship of 750 euro, a sum of money that she will receive each month up until the Olympics in Beijing. 'Every reward motivates you, you feel like your work is more appreciated and it gives you new strength to continue,' said Steliana for Prosport.
The Romanian team received a diploma for the value of 2000 euro for winning bronze and Nicolae Forminte and Mariana Bitang received 1000 euro. Mr. Forminte said that it's very much appreciated that someone is thinking of the work and sacrifices of these gymnasts and to stimulate them financially.

Surprises for Steliana

Steliana celebrated her 18th birthday at the sea-side where she and the team are having a short break after Worlds.
Stela: 'I have received a lot of presents, I didn't expect that at all and I received a lot of birthday wishes, the phone rang all day. I was very surprised with the present that the girls and coaches gave me, a bracelet of Jennifer Lopez. I wish that I will be healthy so I can fulfill everything that I have set myself as a goal,' said Steliana for Prosport, after which she added that the medals won in Stuttgart were a nice present that she gave herself and she would like to change the silver medal into gold at the Olympics.
Elena Francu, the Director of the District for Sport in Constanta gave her a cream cake which ended more on her face than in her mouth.
Mr. Forminte wanted to organise a disco evening but opted for bowling instead.

After they achieved the most important goal at the World Championships in Germany, namely qualifying for the Olympics in 2008, the women's and men's team have gone to Mamaia to recover and for treatment. They will stay there for about 10 to 12 days. The general secretary of the Federation, Mircea Apolzan explains: 'Both teams will stay in Mamaia until the 24th or the 25th of September to follow a program of recovering and most of all treatment. After that the women's team will go back to Deva to start their training again.' ( Gardianul.ro )

13 September 2007

Prosport talked to Nicolae Forminte about the World Championships and he said that it was a difficult Worlds because the pressure was more than usual because of the qualification for the Olympics in Beijing.
He is satisfied that they have fulfilled their goals and now they can focus on preparing for the Olympics, to make sure the routines are sure and secure and to add more difficult elements so that the SV is higher.
Prosport then asks Forminte about being amongst the few who believed in Steliana Nistor and he answers: 'I have to rectify that, I haven't only believed in Steliana, I believe in all the girls with whom I work. I have named Steliana because her preparation showed that she was a gymnast with major chances of achieving a good result. Once again I have demonstrated that I know best what the spirit in the team is but also of each member of the team.'

After arriving back in Bucharest, Steliana said: 'I have controlled my emotions much better and I am really happy with the two silver medals.' (Gazeta Sporturilor)

A second silver medal for Steliana

Saturday saw the event finals of vault and bars in the arena. The first turned into a battle of the two biggest vaulters. Cheng Fei (China) claimed her 3rd world vault title narrowly beating Hong Su Jong (PRK). Both girls the only ones to do two massive 6.5 valued vaults.
Steliana was up 2nd in the bars final and came out with a good routine but made an error and lost 0.2 on her start value. Stela also had a hop forward on landing for a score of 15.800. In the end she dropped to sixth, young Russian Ksenia Semenova (16.350) outgunning American favourite Anastasia Liukin (16.300) for the gold medal.

Sunday and on to the beam final with Steliana and Catalina Ponor both given a decent draw. Catalina chasing the only gold medal on beam that she doesn't have in her collection, started well but missed a connection loosing vital bonus. She also had a few wobbles and a time penalty of 0.1, to end with a 15.700 and take the lead. Steliana was next up (6th) knowing that a higher score would guarantee a medal. Stela started brilliantly nailing her flick full, but had a few balance checks later, she looked as if she missed her footing on the dismount from beam and landed offline taking a couple of steps for a score of 15.900.
Li Shanshan of China hit a near perfect routine but then fell on one of her easiest moves she was awarded a score of 15.900 also, to tie for first place. Last up was Anastasia Liukin of America she had an error in her first series and a step on landing for a score of 16.025 for the gold.
Sandra Izbasa was Romania's only gymnast in the floor final. She had a good routine but landed one of her skills out of the floor area and received a 0.5 deduction to end with 14.525 (8th). The gold was won by Shawn Johnson of America (15.250) narrowly ahead of her teammate Alicia Sacramone (15.225), with France's Cassy Vericel nipping in for a bronze. Favourite Cheng Fei did a perfect routine but lost control of her last tumble and took 3 steps off the floor for a 0.3 deduction ultimately costing her the gold medal.

Steliana wishes health for the future

Prosport talked to Steliana after her great achievement of winning a silver all-around medal at Worlds. Although Stela had problems on beam, she still felt that she could get onto the podium after her beam routine. She said that she yet again had a lot of nerves on beam and she was very happy that she got through it ok. She reveals that it was the first time ever that she looked at the scoreboard and she thinks it brought her good luck.
For the future she just wishes health, that she doesn't have problems anymore and that the pain isn't so severe, that she can increase her scores and to add more valuable elements.
It will be Steliana's birthday on the 15th of September. Is this medal a birthday present?
Steliana: 'Yes, I left the country with the intent to come back with a medal, indifferent of the colour. It will be the most beautiful birthday for me. I am happy.'

Silver for Steliana in the AA

Steliana Nistor has given herself a great 18th birthday present by winning the silver all-around in Stuttgart. After a slight error on bars which saw her score lower than usual (15.225), she had to try and make up ground on beam. She nailed her full-in but then became extremely shakey, having wobbles on numerous elements but she fought hard and was determined enough to not fall off, scoring a 15.550.
She was last up on floor and did the best floor routine she has done, being calm and collective and nailing every tumbling and being very precise on her spins too which she can have difficulty on sometimes. Steliana received a 14.975, the highest score she's had on floor in this code, winning her the silver medal behind Shawn Johnson of America.
Vanessa Ferarri and Jade Barbosa shared the bronze medal.
For Gazeta Sporturilor, Steliana's mother said: 'She needed this medal. She has given herself a great present for her 18th birthday.'

Steliana Nistor: 'It won't be easy.'

Steliana Nistor and Sandra Izbasa will compete in the all-around final later today. Both gymnasts however, are still suffering from injuries and the competition will be anything but easy for them.
Steliana is suffering from back pain but tries to work through the pain and do the best she can. For Prosport she said that competing in the all-around won't be easy because after the Europeans a lot has changed and she has progressed on every apparatus. Some elements she already knew but couldn't perform them due to the health problems she had and on bars she's showing a new element, the toe-on to Shaposhnikova.
In the all-around she wishes to do her job and return home to Romania with a medal or to win a medal in one of the apparatus finals. She knows very well she can do the job and if things turn out just like they go in training, it will be great.
Stela doesn't pay much attention to her adversaries, the most important thing is that she does her job the best she can.
After falling off beam during the team final and going out of bounds twice on floor, how is she going to control her emotions?
Steliana: 'It will be difficult but I hope that I will start well. I always have a lot of nerves because I think that even the slightest error can cost you enormously. You're training year after year and if you're not in shape on the day of the competition it's like you've given up on everything you've done. However, the first elements and links count a lot and after that, slowly but surely you get more courage.'

Sandra feels fine until now but she regrets that she hasn't progressed since Europeans but that was due to her injury. She does feel very tired and had a period in which she couldn't get through the training but she gave everything to get through it. She thinks it would have been better if she would have had more time to recover. At the moment she feels the best on beam and floor.
It will be difficult for her to defend her bronze all-around medal from last year because she doesn't have a high SV. The other gymnasts were able to upgrade their routines while she had to sit it out being injured and she will be able to work more after Worlds, and prove herself at Europeans and the Olympics.

All-Around starting order:

Steliana starts on vault and is third up behind Liukin and Johnson, then goes second up on bars and first on beam and last on floor.
Sandra starts her competition on bars where she's third up and second up on beam, first on floor and last on vault.

The day after

Romanian tv had a short report and had short comments. Nicolae Forminte
said that he can't be happy, he will be happy when Romania wins rightfully. Steliana Nistor said that they have to work harder on everything and Catalina Ponor said that they are starting to go downhill and it's not good.
For Prosport, Adrian Stoica declared that they aren't too happy with the way they have won the bronze medal but that it will make a difference for the rest of the competition as he thinks it will give the girls extra belief and motivation.
He then adds that the competition was one of the most difficult ones that he assisted in over the last years as the pressure was horrendous and to not forget that the gymnasts had to fight for qualification for the Olympics, it's not just a normal World Championship and it's a very long competition and tiring physically and mentally.
He admits that the Romanian team didn't have a good competition but it's difficult to draw a conclusion now so they will wait a couple of days and see what will happen.
About Kramarenko failing to vault he says: 'It's the first time that something like this has happened. The tension of the competition was enormous. Don't forget that we are dealing with adolescents, even children, and that their mental resistence can give way at any time.'
He concludes with saying that the bronze medal that they won will motivate Steliana and Sandra in the individual competition and that it's the moment that they have to understand that everything depends on themselves now, how well they will do their job.

USA win team gold, Romania lucky to win bronze

America beat China in a close final fought out on floor. Romania were lucky to win a bronze medal after Russian gymnast Ecatarina Kramarenko ran up to vault, touched the springboard and the vaulting table but didn't perform a vault and received 0. Everything was lost for the Russian team although Russia competed really well up until that moment.
Romania had multiple errors in their competition. Starting on bars, Sandra Izbasa fell forwards on her double forward somi dismount and had to put her hands down, only scoring a 13.525, Steliana Nistor then fell off beam on her side-somi (14.800) and then went out of bounds twice on floor, only scoring a 13.950. Catalina Ponor had errors in her beam routine too, having a big wobble after her double pirouette and had a break in her linking series and received a 15.625 but performed a beautiful vault (1.5 Yurchenko) scoring a 15.000.
Tiny Daniela Druncea did her job, making no errors on floor and vault and so did Cerasela Patrascu, who sadly enough did water down her bars routine

Steliana is going to fight for gold

Even after the American team has finished their qualifying competition, Steliana is still in first place all-around, leaving Liukin and Johnson behind her.
Nicolae Forminte spoke to Prosport and said that Steliana was much more decisive and motivated than at the Europeans and he hopes that her good routines on bars and beam during qualifications will make her determined to fight and have belief in herself. Forminte added that he was happy for Steliana and he hopes that all the effort and sacrifices that she had made will be repaid by a medal, hopefully in the all-around but also in the apparatus finals.
He then continued to say that they can calm down a bit as their first goal to qualify for the Olympics is fulfilled and now they will concentrate on the team finals.
